Hacker News agent

How the Hacker News agent finds the threads your product belongs in, what it drafts for them, and why you post every reply yourself.

What it does

The Hacker News agent listens for the threads where your product genuinely belongs and drafts one reply per thread. Each reply answers what was asked first; the product is mentioned only when it is the answer, and never as a pitch.

It also drafts the Show HN pitch, but only when there is something finished enough for people to try — three angles on the same launch for you to pick from. It runs every two days, so the threads it reads are the ones posted since it last looked.

When it runs

Every 2 days. It is on when the product is created: it reads a public index, spends nothing and posts nothing by itself. The cadence comes from the agent and is not editable, and it carries no weekly cap. Most days hold no thread worth answering, which is why it looks every other day rather than every day; a thread that lives and dies between two runs is missed.

What it needs

Nothing to connect. Hacker News is read through its public index, so this agent works on any product from the first day.

What it reads

The foundation doc, the growth plan and the product memory first, which is what a thread is scored against. Then the public index of Hacker News stories and Ask HN and Show HN threads, five queries a day for the product — the endpoint is free, which is exactly why Kwern holds itself to a handful of searches. Nothing behind a login is read.

It also remembers the threads it has already answered: one reply per thread, ever.

What it leaves you

Proposals in two categories. A reply carries the thread it answers, so you can read the room before you use it. A post is the Show HN pitch, with its three angles side by side.

Kwern cannot write to Hacker News, so neither of them has an approve. You copy the text, post it from your own account and mark the proposal as done — or reject it, which is the same click it always is.

The skills it runs

It enters through community-marketing, and may activate social.

Editing its instructions

The agent's page in the app carries the instructions it is given at the start of every run, and you rewrite them there — the kind of thread that is worth answering, how close to the launch a Show HN should be. The cadence is not editable. The switch reads on, off or paused, where paused means Kwern stopped it for a reason and will resume it when that reason clears.
